See the Detroit Tigers' 18 non-roster invitees to MLB spring training, including prospects
The Detroit Tigers have invited 18 non-roster players, including more than a half-dozen prospects, to participate in big-league spring training in Lakeland, Florida.
Pitchers and catchers are scheduled for their first workout next Wednesday, followed by the first full-squad workout Feb. 19. Spring training games begin Feb. 24 against the New York Yankees at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland.
The 18 non-roster players and the entire 40-man roster will arrive to the TigerTown facility for MLB camp, totaling 58 players. Only 26 players will make the Opening Day roster.
FIRST CAMP: How Tigers' Jackson Jobe developed into top pitching prospect nearing MLB debut
Of the 18 non-roster invitees, seven of them are considered prospects: left-hander Brant Hurter, right-hander Jackson Jobe, right-hander Ty Madden, catcher Eliezer Alfonzo, outfielder Justice Bigbie, infielder Jace Jung and outfielder Justyn-Henry Malloy.
Second baseman Colt Keith, one of the highest-ranked prospects, was added to the 40-man roster after signing a long-term contract extension at the end of January.
Six of the seven prospects are listed among the Tigers' top-30 prospects by MLB Pipeline: Jobe (No. 3), Jung (No. 4), Madden (No. 6), Malloy (No. 9), Hurter (No. 12) and Bigbie (No. 21). It's the first big-league camp Jobe, Jung, Madden, Hurter and Bigbie.
