SEC releases 10-game conference-only schedule for 2020 football season
We now know what the SEC schedule will look like if the conference has a fall football season in 2020.
The conference released its 10-game conference-only schedule on Monday. And, in true SEC fashion, that release was drawn out for dramatic effect. The conference released the Sept. 26 Week 1 matchups Monday afternoon ahead of the entire schedule at 7 p.m. ET Monday evening.
The Week 1 group of matchups is highlighted by LSU beginning its quest for another national title at home against Mississippi State, now coached by Mike Leach. Alabama, after missing the College Football Playoff for the first time in the format’s history, will open up play on the road against Missouri. Additionally, Lane Kiffin’s Ole Miss tenure will begin with a home game against Florida.
The SEC announced July 30 that it was planning to play a 10-game, conference-only schedule that would begin on Sept. 26. Since then, the Big Ten and Pac-12 canceled their fall seasons altogether due to concerns about the coronavirus pandemic.
The SEC, along with the ACC and Big 12, is pushing forward, however. The conference, which usually plays an eight-game league schedule, added two SEC games to each team’s schedule on Aug. 7.
Iron Bowl isn’t last week of the season
The SEC decided to keep its annual rivalry week on the weekend of Thanksgiving. That’s notable because the final week of the season is Dec. 5. Auburn and Alabama will play each other on Nov. 28 while LSU plays Texas A&M and other rivalries will be played like they typically are in the final week of the regular season.
LSU and Alabama play each other on Nov. 14. Both teams have an off week ahead of the game as they usually do. The annual Florida and Georgia game is scheduled for Nov. 7 in Jacksonville.
The SEC title game is scheduled for Dec. 19. That’s one day ahead of the College Football Playoff’s selection show. Assuming there’s a playoff.
