Sara Bejedi explodes for 31 in No. 21 FSU women's basketball win over No. 11 Virginia Tech

Florida State women's basketball and guard Sara Bejedi made quite the statement this week.

The No. 21 Seminoles completed a sweep of top-20 opponents with an 89-81 victory over No. 11 Virginia Tech Sunday at Donald L. Tucker Civic Center in front of 3,044 fans.

Bejedi scored a career-high 31 points in the third straight victory for the Seminoles (14-4, 5-1), catapulting them ahead of the Hokies (13-3, 4-1) in the ACC standings. She played all 40 minutes.

Ta'Niya Latson finished with 20 points and eight assists. With her 17th point, which came on a free throw late in the fourth quarter, she crossed 1,000 career points. She is tied for the fastest to ever do so in FSU history.

FSU also beat No. 20 North Carolina (70-62) on Thursday. The Seminoles have won three straight games and sit 10 games above .500 for the first time this season.

The Seminoles led by eight after one quarter, but the Hokies outscored the Seminoles 27-13 in the second to take a six-point halftime lead. FSU outscored Virginia Tec 25-16 in the fourth after entering the quarter trailing by one.

Bejedi scored a season-high 23 in the win over the Tar Heels. She topped that and her career-high (26, Jan. 8, 2023, vs. Boston College) with a 3-pointer in the fourth. Her 3-point shot to begin the fourth gave the Seminoles a lead they would never relinquish.

She shot 5-of-9 from 3-point range and 9 of 15 from the field, also adding eight rebounds - which also tied a career-high - and three assists.

Makayla Timpson chipped in 18 points, while O'Mariah Gordon added 17 points, including hitting all three 3-point field goal attempts.

Freshman Carla Viegas hit a 3-pointer in the third quarter. It was the only basket for a Seminole not named Latson, Bejedi, Gordon or Timpson. Gordon played 37 minutes, while Timpson played 34 and Latson 33. Fifth starter Briana Turnage played 30 minutes.

Alexis Tucker and Amaya Bonner each played eight minutes off the bench.

Elizabeth Kitley led the Hokies with 30 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and two blocks. It's the fourth straight game she has scored at least 27 points in. Mackenzie Nelson added 14 points.

The loss snapped an eight-game winning streak for the Hokies.
