The Santa Fe South soccer team was named the Boys Team of the Year during the 2023 OKC Metro High School Sports Awards, presented by BancFirst. The show was held June 8 at the OKC Convention Center.

The basketball team from Frederick A. Douglass and the Carl Albert football team were the other finalists for the award. Douglass, led by Boys Coach of the Year Steven Alexander, won the Class 4A title after battling through a loaded schedule. Carl Albert, paced by a monster season from Offensive Player of the Year Xavier Robinson, won the Class 5A state championship.

After repeating as the Class 4A state champion from 2014-15, Santa Fe South matched that feat in Class 5A this year. The Saints capped their phenomenal season with a 2-0 win over Tulsa East Central for their second straight Class 5-A state title. Victories were rarely close – they outscored their opponents 104-13 and posted 10 shutout wins, including three in the playoffs. Santa Fe South’s only loss came to Tennessee powerhouse Brentwood in an out-of-state tournament, and the Saints responded with an 11-match win streak that carried through the finals.

In all, more than 250 student athletes were honored during the show, which celebrates athletes from the Oklahoma City area. Thirty-two winners were honored as the best in their individual sports, as well as nine premier awards, s, including Boys Athlete of the Year, Girls Athlete of the Year, Boys Team of the Year, Girls Team of the Year, Boys Coach Team of the Year, Girls Coach Team of the Year, the Courage Award, and the School Spirit Award.

The OKC Metro High School Sports Awards show is part of the USA Today High School Sports Awards, the largest high school sports recognition program in the country.
