Padres star Fernando Tatis sent to 10-day IL after latest shoulder injury

San Diego Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. was sent to the 10-day injured list on Saturday afternoon with a shoulder injury, the team announced.

Tatis left the Padres' 9-4 loss to the Colorado Rockies early on Friday night after suffering another partially dislocated left shoulder.

Padres manager Jayce Tingler said Saturday that Tatis was feeling “more sore” than the other shoulder subluxations he’s had in the past, according to MLB’s Aj Cassavell — including the one in April that sidelined him for 10 days. It’s unclear whether Tatis will be able to return after the 10 days this time.

Tatis leaves Rockies loss early

Tatis made a break for third base in the first inning on Friday night in San Diego, but slid right into Rockies shortstop Brendan Rodgers’ tag and was called out.

Almost instantly, however, Tatis flipped over and grabbed his left arm while clearly in pain before settling on the ground. He eventually walked off the field, and did not return.

"It looked painful ... I'm sure the Padres are crossing their fingers that this isn't a long-term thing," Rockies manager Bud Black said, via ESPN. "That's a blow to baseball. He is one of the best players in the game."

This marks the second similar injury he’s had this season, after he partially dislocated his left shoulder swinging in April. He missed 10 days that time, and missed one game in June after hurting that shoulder again briefly.

Tatis was batting .290 and had hit 31 home runs with 70 RBIs so far this season headed into Friday night’s game.

"I don't know how to compare them. They've all been a little bit different," Tingler said, via ESPN. "We're of the understanding that this was a possibility, the shoulder coming out and then back in. The good thing is it slid back in.

"It's so tough to predict, especially without a lot of information at this point. I will say, for whatever reason, he's had a phenomenal ability of getting back in there, honestly sooner than we've expected.”
