Salesianum, Saint Mark's basketball coaches suspended after heated exchange
Basketball coaches at Saint Mark’s High and Salesianum School have been suspended by the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association after a fracas at the end of last Thursday’s game between the rivals in the Saint Mark’s gym.
Assistant coaches Jim Freel of Saint Mark’s and Kerry Kinard of Salesianum must miss two games each. In a video shared on the Delaware HS Athletes Parents Facebook page, the two appeared to have a heated exchange and needed to be physically separated.
Head coaches Lonnie Wright of Saint Mark’s and Taylor Trevisan of Salesianum must sit out one game, meaning Trevisan will miss Tuesday night’s home showdown between Dover, ranked second in the state by Delaware Online/The News Journal, and the fourth-ranked Sals. Wright will miss the seventh-ranked Spartans’ Thursday visit to Wilmington Christian.
Salesianum, which trailed by a point entering the fourth quarter, took command in the final period and won 56-43, finalizing the win with an emphatic dunk that irked Saint Mark's.
Tempers apparently flared and carried over into the postgame handshakes. The gym floor became crowded as people exited the gym with some trying to intervene in various confrontations, including the one between the assistant coaches.
As that was happening, the public-address announcer can be heard ordering students and others in the crowd to "Clear the floor now!" and urging "both schools" to "show some class and clear the floor."
The DIAA did not suspend any players, executive director David Baylor said.
“We are still investigating the issue and we’re working with both schools’ administrations on this. Both are cooperating with the investigation,” said Baylor, who would not elaborate further.
Saint Mark's athletic director Matt Smith said the DIAA "took appropriate actions against the coaches" and added that the two schools "have worked together and took appropriate actions against the students."
Salesianum AD Katie Godfrey echoed Smith, saying both schools hope to use the incident as "a teachable moment" that will "hold students and coaches accountable" for their actions.
