Saints report a long list of midweek roster moves, shaking up the depth chart
The New Orleans Saints had some extra time off after their Thursday night game a week ago, and they've been busy retooling their depth chart in the days since. Veteran wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling was signed but starting cornerback Paulson Adebo was lost to a season-ending injury, and more changes impacted the practice squad.
Here's what you need to know about all seven roster moves the team reported this week:
WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling signed to the 53-man roster
Valdes-Scantling replaces Rashid Shaheed as the speedy deep threat Klint Kubiak relies upon for chunk plays, but he'll need to perform at a higher level than he did for the Buffalo Bills earlier this season and thee Kansas City Chiefs last year.
CB Paulson Adebo designated to injured reserve
Adebo suffered a broken leg in last week's loss to the Denver Broncos, and he's facing a lengthy six-month recovery after having emergency surgery on his femur. Unlike other players going on injured reserve, his season is done. It's really tough timing for him on the eve of free agency in 2025.
S Johnathan Abram released from the practice squad
This was a bit of a surprise. Abram had been called up for the maximum three games he was eligible for while playing plenty of snaps, but clearly the coaching staff wanted to go in a different direction. They would've had to sign him to the 53-man roster for him to continue playing but, for now, he's a free agent.
OL Chris Reed released from the practice squad
Reed was only recently signed and didn't play much, so the team must feel good about their depth along the offensive interior. He's one of the best-experienced guards available. We're still a ways off from starting center Erik McCoy's return which will do a lot to settle the depth chart around him.
S Roderic Teamer signed to the practice squad
Teamer is a veteran safety with starter's experience like Abram, and that figures to be his role. He was solid throughout preseason and could be activated soon if the secondary continues to take hits.
CB Shemar Jean-Charles signed to the practice squad
Jean-Charles is back again, and he'll likely stick around for a while in the wake of Adebo's injury. He was one of the team's top backups on the second-string defense throughout the summer but was surpassed by guys like Rico Payton, whose performance on special teams has more than justified his roster spot.
C Sincere Haynesworth signed to the practice squad
Haynesworth is back after spending the summer with the Saints; he also played college football at Tulane. He's got experience at center but tried out at the guard spots, too, so we'll see if he takes Reed's place on the gameday roster.
