Saints announce last-minute roster moves before Week 9 game vs. Panthers
The New Orleans Saints have quite the list of roster moves ahead of their Week 9 matchup with the Carolina Panthers, including a few players moving to injured reserve, promotions to the active roster from the practice squad, and a downgrade in status. These moves are unfortunately mostly moves to try and fill out spots left behind by injury, as the Saints continue to deal with a litany of injuries despite overcoming many of them prior to last week's game against the Los Angeles Chargers.
Here are all of the additional roster moves the Saints made prior to their Week 9 game:
CB Shemar Jean-Charles, RB Jordan Mims, and S Millard Bradford all signed to active roster
Shemar Jean-Charles was a somewhat obvious signing, as the Saints continue to deal with injuries in the cornerback room with Marshon Lattimore (hamstring), Kool-Aid McKinstry (hamstring), and Paulson Adebo (femur) all out for this game. Jean-Charles look to be a somewhat quality player during preseason for the Saints, and could see some significant playing time given the rotation of players the Saints tend to have at CB.
Jordan Mims was also signed due to injury at his position, with multiple running back injuries occurring (see injury updates in later slides) the Saints needed some more depth at the position behind Alvin Kamara. Mims has had time with the team in recent memory, and will be able to provide on special teams when needed as well.
Millard Bradford was also called up to fill out the safety room/add more versatility on special teams with all the recent injury updates. Bradford has been with the Saints on and off the roster for a little bit now, and has not seen a snap as of yet so maybe this week will be his chance.
WR Bub Means and RB Kendre Miller to the injured reserve
Kendre Miller's new hamstring injury has unfortunately sidelined him for four more games this season, moving him up to miss 10 of the first 12 games in 2024. He has dealt with many different injuries since being drafted in 2023, and this is now his third instance of a hamstring injury as well. With the Saints lacking depth at the position, this certainly did not help.
Bub Means also got moved to IR due to a high ankle sprain, and the rookie wide receiver will now not have a chance to build on the momentum he had started to see in recent weeks. Another position where the Saints have truly lacked any noticeable depth, this loss will definitely be felt until his return in four weeks.
Waived G Kyle Hergel
The Saints made one move to take a player off the roster aside from injuries, which was waiving rookie guard Kyle Hergel. Hergel has played in five games for the Saints this season, taking 45 offensive snaps (13% in those games) and 16 special teams snaps (11% in those games). He will likely end up being a candidate to return to the practice squad if he clears waivers, as the Saints always need more offensive line depth.
RB Jamaal Williams downgraded to out
The other move at running back was the downgrade for Jamaal Williams, who went from doubtful to out in this series of roster moves. He is dealing with a groin injury, and this will leave the Saints with only Alvin Kamara and Jordan Mims on the active roster at running back for the moment, which will certainly be difficult to work through. With Taysom Hill returning, however, that could help their ground game for some snaps.
Elevated S Roderic Teamer and CB Tre Herndon with standard elevations from the practice squad
Tre Herndon was signed to the Saints practice squad earlier this week presumably in preparation for injuries at the position to hold players out. Now that this is the case, the Saints elevated the six-year veteran to the active roster, and he will likely also get some significant playing time since the position will need contributors no doubt.
Roderic Teamer was also brought up to help deepen the DB room for this week, and considering he has played with the Saints for only one game so far this year, we will see where he gets his snaps. He could be considered a depth option at cornerback or safety, or maybe a special teams contributor as well.
