George Russell of Mercedes topped the first practice on Friday for the Formula One Mexican Grand Prix, in a session that was interrupted by two red flags.

Russell clocked the fastest time of 1 minute 17.998 seconds, beating the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz by 0.317s. Yuki Tsunoda of Visa RB was third.

Three-time world champion Max Verstappen left the session with concerns over his Red Bull car as he returned to the garage with five minutes left in the practice complaining about engine issues.

The Dutchman was fourth, while team-mate and home favourite Sergio Perez was 10th.

Verstappen is without victory in nine grands prix but tops the standings 57 points ahead of title contender Lando Norris of McLaren.

Norris didn't participate in the first practice and was replaced by Patricion O'Ward as several reserve drivers got some time on track.

Norris will be aiming to boost his title hopes and claim McLaren's first win in Mexico since Ayrton Senna in 1989.

The first red flag came early in the session after debris were spotted on the track. Verstappen reported he hit the debris and had to have his car repaired while the session resumed.

The session was interrupted for a second time after Alex Albon's Williams clattered into the side of the Ferrari of Oliver Bearman before hitting the barriers.

Bearman, who will next year race for Haas, was driving Charles Leclerc's car. Brazilian Felipe Drugovich took the Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso, who on Sunday will celebrate his 400th Grand Prix.

Second practice is later on Friday. Qualifying for Sunday's race is on Saturday after the final practice.
