Damian Lillard, Rudy Gobert, others reportedly choose social justice messages for bubble jerseys

We’re starting to get reports about the social justice messages that some NBA players are choosing to put on the back of their NBA bubble jerseys. Those words or phrases will replace the players’ names, and they come from a list approved by the NBA and players union.

Yahoo Sports’ Chris Haynes reported the choices of nine players on Tuesday’s “Inside the NBA” on TNT.

Haynes reported nine players and their choices:

  • Kent Bazemore, Sacramento Kings — “Education Reform”

  • Pat Connaughton, Milwaukee Bucks — “Equality”

  • Rudy Gobert, Utah Jazz — “Equality”

  • Meyers Leonard, Miami Heat — “Equality”

  • CJ McCollum, Portland Trail Blazers — “Education Reform”

  • Jusuf Nurkic, Trail Blazers — “Equality”

  • Matisse Thybulle, Philadelphia 76ers — “Vote”

  • Moe Wagner, Washington Wizards — “Vote”

  • Ivica Zubac, Los Angeles Clippers — “Enough”

Later on Wednesday, Haynes reported that Damian Lillard, Enes Kanter, and Marvin Bagley III had also made their choices.

Here’s the list of approved words and phrases, according to ESPN’s Marc J. Spears:

Black Lives Matter; Say Their Names; Vote; I Can't Breathe; Justice; Peace; Equality; Freedom; Enough; Power to the People; Justice Now; Say Her Name; Sí Se Puede (Yes We Can); Liberation; See Us; Hear Us; Respect Us; Love Us; Listen; Listen to Us; Stand Up; Ally; Anti-Racist; I Am A Man; Speak Up; How Many More; Group Economics; Education Reform; and Mentor.

Not all NBA players are happy with the choices they’ve been given. Jaylen Brown of the Boston Celtics and Mike Scott of the 76ers both criticized the list on Monday, with Brown calling it “disappointing” and Scott calling it “terrible” and “a bad list.”

The NBA’s bubble restart is scheduled to kick off on July 30.
