Ruben Amorim has admitted that he did consider the possibility of becoming manager of Manchester City, but insists that Manchester United were always the club for him.

The Sporting Club manager is set to replace Erik ten Hag as Red Devils boss on 11 November after four years of success in Lisbon.

But the Portuguese tactician had been mooted as a potential successor to Pep Guardiola, who is out of contract at Man City next summer.

Those links grew legs after it was confirmed that Sporting director Hugo Viana would become the Premier League champion’s new director of football at the end of the season.

Speaking ahead of Sporting’s Champions League game with City on Tuesday, Amorim says he did think about following Viana to the blue half of Manchester, but ultimately wanted to join Man Utd above all else.

“Obviously, it’s something which crossed my mind but I never had any doubt,” he said.

“My decision has been made, that’s the club I want to work for, the context I want to be in, and where I want to continue my career.

“I didn’t want anything else. It is a decision I thought about but was not undecided about it. I wanted Man Utd and that’s what I did.”
