Rookie report card: Grading the Saints 2024 draft class after Week 8
The New Orleans Saints continued their losing streak with a loss Sunday to the Los Angeles Chargers and while some rookies remained consistent despite this challenging stretch, others tailed off their path just a little. With some bumps in the road expected from these young players, it is still always great to see the potential of every single one and how they may be able to impact the team not only now but in the future.
With that said, here are our Week 8 grades for the Saints 2024 rookie class:
LT Taliese Fuaga
Fuaga remains one of the steadier, more reliable players on this team despite the state that they're in. He was the second highest graded Saint after Sunday loss, posting a 74.9 grade according to PFF.
Grade: A-
CB Kool-Aid McKinstry
Kool-Aid's play stuck out like a sore thumb unfortunately as he allowed two explosives that led to points for the Chargers. These were the first for a rookie who is now expected to play a big role with Paulson Adebo out of the lineup. With that said, he also forced a couple of incompletions that got his defense off of the field in crucial moments.
Grade: C
QB Spencer Rattler
Hard to give a positive grade on a player that was benched during the game but I'll give Spencer the benefit of the doubt. Although his pocket presence was subpar and his overall operation was a little sped up, he did rip multiple crucial throws in which receivers dropped or was tipped at the line of scrimmage. Some of these however, had to do with the pace on his ball which needs to be a focal point going forward. Every pass seems to be a line drive when he lets it loose but overall, I don't feel too much different than I did previously with him. Lots of upside, needs more time on task.
Grade: C
WR Bub Means
Bub Means finished this one with a lone catch 36-yard catch in the 4th quarter from Jake Haener, his only target of the game. Even with limited targets this game, I've been impressed overall with what we've seen from Means, as he's been catching mostly most balls thrown to him on the perimeter while also being able to stretch the field as we saw on Sunday.
Grade: B-
LB Jaylan Ford
Ford was inactive this week as the team had their entire group back from injury.
Grade: N/A
DT Khristian Boyd
Boyd was an inactive this week as the team decided to roll with John Ridgeway III instead.
Grade: N/A
OT Josiah Ezirim
Role remains the same as a practice squad member.
Grade: N/A
WR Mason Tipton
Tipton caught each of his two targets Sunday but his role in the offense doesn't seem to be really expanding, as a guy with some speed and downfield ability.
Grade: C
P Matthew Hayball
Hayball had the most active day of his career, punting 9 times on the day for a total of 437 yards! The rookie averaged 48.6 yards per punt with a long of 59, also nailing five inside the 20. Definitely one of if not his best day as a Saint.
Grade: B+
CB Rico Payton
Rico Payton's role as a gunner on special teams has been evident as of late, preventing jammer's from getting hands on and getting down the field in a hurry, ultimately preventing the potential for a big return. Love what we're seeing from the rookie.
Grade: A-
TE Dallin Holker
Holker was inactive in this one with Taysom Hill back in the lineup.
Grade: N/A
