Rodney Hood fined $35K for smacking phone out of fan's hand after ejection

Rodney Hood isn’t a firebrand by nature, but he found himself feeling frustrated on Wednesday night. First, a courtside fan’s phone paid the price; now, the Utah Jazz swingman will have to pay the piper, too.

With 2 1/2 minutes to go in the third quarter of Utah’s matchup with the Washington Wizards, Hood drove to the basket and attempted a layup. He felt he was fouled on the play, but didn’t get the benefit of a call … and, in a break from his typical mild-mannered approach, the fourth-year swingman out of Duke lashed out at referee Tony Brothers for keeping his whistle in his pocket. Brothers warned Hood to pipe down as he made his way back down the court, but Hood persisted in jawing as the Jazz played defense, eventually leading the official to give Hood a technical foul.

It was his second T of the game, prompting an automatic ejection, much to the delight of the crowd at Capital One Arena in Washington.

Well, not all members of the crowd, I guess. Because as Hood made his way back to the locker room, he decided to take out his frustrations on one fan who was filming his exit by slapping the taste out of his smartphone:

Even if nobody wants to be filmed during moments of anger and disappointment, that wasn’t very nice of our man Rodney. That said, I’m crossing my fingers that the fan managed to get enough first-person footage of the matter to give us all some Instagram gold. It’s all about the filter choice, though. The sleep mask would be a nice touch, I think, but it’s hard to go wrong with a good ol’ dog face.

Kyle Goon of the Salt Lake Tribune later reported that “the fan spoke with Capital One Center security and Jazz security officials for much of the fourth quarter, pressing for police action” against Hood, which seems about as excessive as smacking some dude’s phone out of his hand. No need to get the fuzz involved, my guy.

While we continue to wait with bated breath to see if Hood’s going to wind up posing for a mugshot as a result of his intransigence, the NBA announced Friday afternoon that it has concluded its post-mortem investigation into the matter and meted out its punishment: a $35,000 fine. So, if you’re keeping score at home, slapping a fan’s phone out of his hand, pretending to shoot a heckler, and mimicking cunnilingus at a heckler are all exactly equally bad.
