Richard Sherman says Jeremy Lane's return to Seahawks will be 'awkward'
It has been one helluva week for Jeremy Lane.
Just one day after learning he had been traded to Houston in a package for Texans offensive tackle Duane Brown, the 27-year-old cornerback failed his physical and returned to the Seattle Seahawks.
“I’m sure it’ll be awkward between him and some people,” fellow cornerback Richard Sherman told reporters on Wednesday.
“We’re lucky we’re getting him back,” Seahawks coach Pete Carroll added. “We’re better the way this turned out. … I don’t see a problem at all.”
The original deal involved Lane going to Houston, along with Seattle’s fifth-round draft choice in 2018, and second-rounder in 2019. With Lane’s return though, the Seahawks will now send both a third-round pick in 2018 and a second-rounder in 2019, in exchange for Brown and Houston’s 2018 fifth-rounder.
It begs the question of whether or not Lane — who signed a four-year contract extension in 2016 — will be motivated and comfortable returning to a franchise he knows wanted him gone. Sherman at least, isn’t worried.
“He’s a pro,” the All-Pro corner said. “At the end of the day, you know how much this is a business. … He’s always been a consummate professional, and I think he’ll approach this in the same way.
“I think it’ll be a blessing in disguise. He’ll be fine when he comes back.”
Lane’s career as a Seahawk has unfortunately been limited by a slew of injuries. The biggest play of his life — an interception of Tom Brady in Super Bowl XLIX — was also one of the most damaging. Lane endured a severe arm injury and torn ACL on the interception return, missing 10 games in 2015. This season, he missed two games due to a groin injury and lost his starting job to rookie Shaquill Griffin.
The 5-2 Seahawks have rattled off four consecutive wins and are in first place in the NFC West. They will host Washington in Week 9.
