Reports: Texas Tech football's Zach Kittley, Kenny Perry interview for UTEP job

Texas Tech football offensive coordinator Zach Kittley and special teams coordinator and running backs coach Kenny Perry are among candidates who have interviewed for the vacant head-coaching job at Texas-El Paso, according to reports Sunday.

Dave Campbell's Texas Football writer Mike Craven reported that Austin Peay head coach Scotty Walden and Nevada-Las Vegas offensive coordinator Brennan Marion were the top two candidates going into Sunday, according to coaching industry sources. He wrote that Kittley "also interviewed and fits the profile the Miners want."

El Paso television sports reporter Colin Deaver from KTSM reported that UTEP interviewed Perry, Walden and Eric Price, a former UTEP offensive coordinator and NFL assistant, over the weekend in Dallas. Deaver's sources said Marion was scheduled to interview on Sunday.

Kittley and Perry both are charter members of Joey McGuire's Texas Tech staff. Kittley coaches quarterbacks in addition to being the offensive coordinator, and Perry also is associate head coach and running backs coach.

In mid-November, Perry was among those still in contention for the Broyles Award that goes to the nation's top assistant coach. He's the position coach for Tahj Brooks, the FBS's fourth-leading rusher this season, and for Tech several special-teams players and units that also rank among the nation's best.

Perry was a head coach at three Texas high schools in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and has been on college staffs at Houston, TCU, Kansas and SMU.

Kittley's father, Tech track and field coach Wes Kittley, said Zach Kittley received overtures last offseason from Mississippi State, North Carolina and Texas A&M for staff vacancies with Mississippi State being the most ardent.
