Reports: Seahawks signing longtime Lions pass-rusher Ziggy Ansah
The Seattle Seahawks are signing longtime Detroit Lions defensive end Ziggy Ansah to a one-year deal, according to NFL Network and ESPN.
Ansah will fly to Seattle on Thursday to sign the contract that has been verbally agreed upon, according to ESPN.
Seattle needs pass-rush help after Clark trade
Ansah will help fill the void of departed pass-rusher Frank Clark, whom the Seahawks traded in April to the Kansas City Chiefs for a package of draft picks that included a first-round selection this year.
Clark led Seattle with 13 sacks last season.
The Seahawks used that pick — the 29th — to select TCU defensive end L.J. Collier.
Ansah coming off shoulder injury
Ansah, 30, was hampered by a shoulder injury that required surgery and limited him to seven games and four sacks last season, a year he played on the franchise tag. He recorded 12 sacks in 14 games in 2017 and 14.5 sacks in a Pro Bowl campaign in 2015.
Ansah remained on the market long after most free agents signed in part over concerns for his shoulder injury. ESPN reports that by waiting until Thursday to sign him, the Seahawks will avoid losing a 2020 compensatory draft pick.
He could return from his shoulder injury as soon as training camp, according to ESPN.
