Reports: Saints to visit with free agent safety Justin Simmons on Wednesday
Whew. This would be a big get -- the New Orleans Saints will be hosting free agent safety Justin Simmons in Irvine on Wednesday for a free agent visit, as first reported by NewOrleans.Football's Nick Underhill and confirmed by Saints News Network's John Hendrix as well as Luke Johnson for the Times-Picayune | Advocate.
Simmons, 30, is the best available free agent in the league right now. He's earned four All-Pro nods and two Pro Bowl trips in his eight-year career with the Denver Broncos and intercepted 30 passes in 118 games, most in the NFL since he entered the league in 2016. The Broncos cut him as a salary cap casualty this spring after he made the Pro Bowl again last season.
Neither Jordan Howden nor Johnathan Abram have emerged as a surefire starter next to Tyrann Mathieu, so it makes sense for the Saints to explore all options at safety. They also have plenty of cash to spend with an estimated $11.8 million in salary cap space. We'll have to wait and see how this visit goes and how seriously the Saints are in pursuing Simmons, so stay tuned.
