Porter was fired as the Crew's coach in 2022 after failing to lead the club to the playoffs in consecutive seasons.
"I’ll take responsibility," Porter said after his team's final game of the 2022 season. "I’m the head coach. This offseason starts today. Let’s see where it’s at. There’s going to be, I’m sure, a lot of discussions. I have a year left on my contract, so I plan on honoring that. I hope I get the chance."
In 2020, Porter led the Crew to its second MLS Cup title, beating Seattle Sounders SC 3-0.
In four seasons as the Crew's coach, Porter led the team to a record of 52-46-39. His teams posted a plus-21 goal differential.
Porter previously spent five seasons as the coach of the Portland Timbers, where he was named as the 2013 MLS Coach of the Year and won the 2015 MLS Cup.
Porter previously coached at the University of Akron, where he led the Zips to a NCAA Division I championship in 2010.
The Crew replaced Porter with Wilfried Nancy in 2023, who led the club to its third MLS Cup title.
In 2023, the New England Revolution finished fifth in the Eastern Conference with a 15-10-9 record and a plus-12 goal differential. Clint Peay served as the interim head coach to finish the season after the resignation of head coach Bruce Arena due to allegations of insensitive and inappropriate remarks.
The Crew were undefeated against New England in 2023, tying the Revolution at home 1-1 April 15 before beating them on the road 2-1 Oct. 4.
