Reports: Alabama co-offensive coordinator Josh Gattis to be Michigan's offensive coordinator
Michigan has reportedly found its offensive coordinator.
According to multiple reports, Alabama co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach Josh Gattis will take over as Michigan’s offensive coordinator.
Confirmed, Alabama co-offensive coordinator Josh Gattis will be the new offensive coordinator at Michigan. More to come …

Gattis’ move to Michigan comes after reports that he could be heading to Maryland to be the offensive coordinator under Mike Locksley. Gattis and Locksley shared offensive coordinator duties with the Crimson Tide in 2018.
Gattis was only at Alabama for a season and has significant familiarity with the Big Ten and the Big Ten East. He worked for six years as the receivers coach for Penn State coach James Franklin. The first two seasons came at Vanderbilt and he was with Franklin in State College for four seasons before spending 2018 in Tuscaloosa.
Michigan’s offense didn’t have an official coordinator in 2018. Coach Jim Harbaugh worked with wide receivers coach Jim McElwain, running backs coach Jay Harbaugh and passing game coordinator Pep Hamilton, among others, in 2018. McElwain is now the head coach at Central Michigan.
Alabama looking for a new offensive coordinator, again
Gattis’ departure means Alabama will have a new offensive coordinator for the fourth time in four seasons. And that’s not counting Steve Sarkisian, who was the Tide’s offensive coordinator for the 2017 national championship game before moving to be the offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons.
Sarkisian replaced Lane Kiffin, who took the head coaching job at Florida Atlantic after the 2016 season. Brian Daboll was the team’s offensive coordinator in 2017 and he’s now the OC for the Buffalo Bills. Locksley was hired in December as Maryland’s new head coach.
Michigan last hired an Alabama assistant to be the team’s offensive coordinator before the 2014 season. Brady Hoke hired Doug Nussmeier to be the team’s coordinator and Nussmeier lasted just one season before Hoke was fired and Harbaugh was hired to take over the program.
Michigan averaged over 35 points per game in 2018
The Wolverines were just outside the top 20 in scoring offense in 2018 and averaged 6.1 yards per play. The offense was based around the running game as the Wolverines ran the ball 42 times per game and passed it just 26 times per game. With Shea Patterson back for his senior season in 2019, that ratio could be different next season.
The Michigan offense bookended the season with poor performances, however. Michigan scored just 17 points in a Week 1 loss to Notre Dame and 15 points in a Peach Bowl loss to Florida.
