Report: Travis Scott to join Maroon 5 for Super Bowl halftime show
Travis Scott will join the Super Bowl halftime show in Atlanta with Maroon 5, according to TMZ.
Maroon 5 is reportedly also in talks with Cardi B and Outkast’s Big Boi to join the show. The news comes a day after The Grapevine wrote of black artists — including Cardi B — declining the offer.
The Super Bowl is Feb. 3 in Atlanta’s Mercedes Benz Stadium.
Scott continues to conquer 2018
Scott is one of the year’s biggest artists and will likely be adding to his Grammy nominations from last year. The rapper and producer’s “SICKO MODE,” featuring Drake, reached No. 1 on the Billboard charts. It’s the second single from his latest album, Astroworld.
In 2017 he released a collaborative album with Atlanta rapper Quavo titled “Huncho Jack, Jack Huncho.”
In the business for only a handful of years, he’s produced for Kanye West, Wale, Jay-Z, Big Sean, John Legend, Rihanna and Madonna.
He’s also well known for being part of the Kardashian clan. He and Kylie Jenner have a daughter, Stormi, born in February. Hours before TMZ dropped its news, Rolling Stone published a story with the rapper. Scott told the magazine the two will get married soon and “I gotta propose in a fire way.”
Coincidence? Hopefully.
Black artists rejecting halftime offers
The Grapevine detailed black artists declining to play the show in a column that published Wednesday. One of the biggest issues people had after reports broke that Maroon 5 would headline was that there is plenty of homegrown talent to choose from, especially given Atlanta’s place as the capital of black music.
At least half a dozen performers have turned down offers to perform with Maroon 5, according to Variety. The band reportedly approached Cardi B, who is featured on its hit “Girls Like You,” Mary J Blige and Andre 3000 to be involved in the halftime show. All have declined or faced scheduling conflicts, per Variety.
Rihanna reportedly turned down the offer to play to show solidarity with Colin Kaepernick. A source told US Weekly she doesn’t agree with how the NFL handled and is handling players kneeling in protest of police brutality.
And Jay-Z reportedly turned down the offer last year. When his single “Apeshit” with wife Beyonce came out this year, it included the lines:
“I said no to the Super Bowl: you need me, I don’t need you
Every night we in the endzone, tell the NFL we in stadiums, too.”
The gig also doesn’t pay much and faces immense criticism no matter who the act.
