Steph Curry out with Grade 2 MCL sprain, return for playoffs possible

Bay Area basketball fans can start breathing again — or at least begin feeling cautiously optimistic.

Steph Curry has been diagnosed with a Grade 2 MCL sprain and will be re-evaluated in three weeks. He is likely to return for the playoffs if all goes well.

That’s a significantly better report than what was feared when Curry limped off the court on Friday after JaVale McGee fell on his leg while going for the ball.

The Warriors have already locked up a playoff spot and have been dealing with some rough injury scares of late. Now that they’re four games back of Houston for the top seed in the Western Conference with 10 games to play, the urgency to win out should be dialed back a bit. All that matters now is getting the team healthy for another run to The Finals.

Grade 2 MCL sprains generally heal in about a month to six weeks. A quick recovery here could have Curry ready to go for the first round of the postseason depending on how quickly those games start after the Warriors’ season ends on April 10. Odds are that Golden State won’t be rushing it’s MVP point guard back so don’t expect to hear any recovery timelines set in stone.

In any case, it’s not entirely terribly news — especially compared to how it looked on Friday.
