Report: Patriots trade for Mohamed Sanu, send second-round pick to Falcons

The New England Patriots steamrolled the New York Jets on Monday night, but that didn’t stop them from acquiring another receiver for Tom Brady to target. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Patriots have traded for Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Mohamed Sanu. The Patriots are reportedly sending a second-round pick back to Atlanta.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that the Patriots tried to acquire Sanu during the draft in April, but weren’t able to make it happen.

Sanu, 30, is in his eighth season in the NFL, and in his fourth with the Falcons. He has 313 yards on 33 receptions for the Falcons this season and one touchdown. While a second-round pick may seem like a high price to pay for Sanu, the recent injuries to players like Julian Edelman, Phillip Dorsett and Josh Gordon mean the Patriots could use a veteran like Sanu to provide a little insurance. Sanu is signed through the 2020 season.

As far as that second-round pick, the Patriots aren’t giving up anything they’re not already getting back. According to Schefter, the Patriots are getting two second-round picks back in compensation for losing two players in free agency in the most recent offseason.
