The Green Bay Packers have offered their head coaching position to Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports.

According to the report, the team has notified other candidates that they are not being considered any more, indicating that the LaFleur hire is close to a done deal.

UPDATE (1/8/2018): The Packers announced LaFleur as their head coach on Tuesday.

LaFleur’s résumé

LaFleur, 39, spent one year as the Titans offensive coordinator. He started his NFL coaching career in 2008 as an offensive quality control coach with the Houston Texans. He spent four years as the quarterbacks coach of the Washington Redskins from 2010-13 and had the same job with the Atlanta Falcons from 2015-16.

He spent 2017 as the offensive coordinator with the Los Angeles Rams before taking the Titans job prior to this season.

The Titans fielded the NFL’s 25th-ranked offense in 2018. Quarterback Marcus Mariota had his least-productive season in four years as a passer, averaging 180.6 yards per game through the air while throwing 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

LaFleur part of Shanahan tree that produced McVay

LaFleur was the coordinator of the Rams breakthrough season in 2017 under head coach Sean McVay that saw its offense jump from last in the league to the 10th-most productive unit in terms of yardage.

LaFleur was a member of the Mike Shanahan coaching staff in Washington that also produced McVay and San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan as NFL head coaches.

His experience working with quarterbacks was clearly a selling point in the hiring process with Aaron Rodgers being the key to any success the Packers hope to have. In addition to working with Mariota, Lafleur worked closely with Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, Rams quarterback Jared Goff and then-Washington quarterbacks Kirk Cousins and Robert Griffin III.

Other candidates to reportedly interview for the Packers job vacated by fired head coach Mike McCarthy included New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, interim head coach Joe Philbin and Patriots defensive coordinator Brian Flores.
