Bills officially name Joe Brady, most recently coordinator in Carolina, as QB coach
The Buffalo Bills made it official Friday morning: Their new quarterbacks coach is Joe Brady.
Brady was the receivers coach and passing game coordinator for LSU in 2019 when it won the national championship with Joe Burrow at quarterback, and fellow NFL stars Justin Jefferson and Ja’Marr Chase at wide receiver.
That LSU offense is considered by some to be the most prolific in college football history, and Brady was voted as the nation’s top assistant coach and presented with the Broyles Award, named in honor of the legendary former Arkansas Razorbacks head coach and athletic director, Frank Broyles.
Brady parlayed that one magnificent season into his first NFL job in 2020 at the age of 30 when new Carolina Panthers coach Matt Rhule hired him to be his offensive coordinator, though the relationship fell apart quickly and Brady was fired late in 2021, reportedly because Rhule did not think Brady called enough rushing plays and was too reliant on the passing game.

Buffalo Bills' 2021 offense report card: Josh Allen was elite, O-line needs to improve
Strapped at quarterback with Teddy Bridgewater last year and the combination of Sam Darnold and Cam Newton this year, the Panthers’ offense struggled mightily. Carolina ranked 24th in scoring in 2020 and 29th in 2021.
Brady will certainly be stepping up in class with Josh Allen as his quarterback in BUffalo.
Brady was actually a head coaching candidate despite the poor showing in 2020 and interviewed for the vacancies with the Jets, Falcons, Chargers and Texans, but got none of the jobs.
After firing Brady, Rhule said, "I certainly don’t look at that as a mistake. What Joe did the first year, dealing with COVID and installing a whole new system, obviously we’ve had some turnover at the quarterback position. I look at Joe’s time here, I see all the good things that he did. I think Joe’s gonna have a fantastic career. Sometimes the worst things that happen to you are the best. I’m grateful for his time here. He’s done a lot at a young age. He’s got a lot more to do, and he’ll do a lot of great things.”
The Bills QB coach job opened when Ken Dorsey was promoted to offensive coordinator Tuesday, and assistant QB coach Shea Tierney - who was thought to be a possible replacement - took the same position Wednesday with the New York Giants in rejoining their new head coach, Brian Daboll.
Brady was a wide receiver during his college career at William & Mary which happens to be the alma mater of Bills head coach Sean McDermott. He was a bit player, though, making only three catches for 34 yards in his 23-game career.
He stayed at William & Mary to begin his coaching career, tutoring linebackers for two seasons, then went to Penn State and worked two years as a graduate assistant.
He got his first big break when Sean Payton hired him to be an offensive assistant in 2017 for the Saints, and then he moved up the bayou to Baton Rouge to work for Ed Orgeron at LSU and helped lead the Tigers to a 15-0 record as Burrow threw for 5,671 yards and 60 touchdowns.
