Report: Jarrett Allen reaches $100 million agreement with the Cleveland Cavaliers
Jarrett Allen has agreed to a five-year, $100 million rookie contract extension with the Cleveland Cavaliers, according to The Athletic's Shams Charania.
The 23-year-old center averaged 13.2 points (61 FG%, 69 FT%), 9.9 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.4 blocks in 30.3 minutes over 51 games with the Cavaliers after being traded as part of the deal that sent one-time MVP James Harden to the Brooklyn Nets. The Nets selected Allen 22nd overall in the 2017 NBA draft.
The 6-foot-11 Allen will share the Cleveland frontcourt with 7-foot Evan Mobley, the highly touted No. 3 overall pick in this year's draft. The Cavaliers also boast recent lottery picks Collin Sexton, Darius Garland and Isaac Okoro. They finished 22-50 this past season and have not made the playoffs since LeBron James left Cleveland for the Los Angeles Lakers in 2018. The Cavs previously reached four straight NBA Finals.
The Allen and Mobley partnership will be a unique one. Allen has been one of the league's most underrated rim runners and protectors, while Mobley has the skill level to create in space and shoot from distance.
Both moves are another signal of the likely end to Kevin Love's long-term future with the Cavaliers. The 32-year-old member of Cleveland's 2016 championship team played just 25 games due to injury this past season. He was also limited to 22 games during the 2018-19 campaign. Love has long been the subject of trade rumors, but teams have been hesitant to take the $60 million still remaining on his contract.
The Cavaliers acquired Allen in the four-team trade that sent Harden to Brooklyn. It cost Cleveland the Milwaukee Bucks' unprotected 2022 first-round pick, which the Cavs acquired in exchange for George Hill. In essence, Cleveland general manager Koby Altman turned Hill into his team's new $100 million center.
