Report: Georgia QB Jacob Eason expected to transfer to Washington
It looks like Jacob Eason’s time at Georgia has come to an end.
According to the Seattle Times, Eason, “barring a last-minute change of heart,” will transfer to the University of Washington. Eason, a former five-star recruit, is a native of Lake Stevens, Washington, a town less than an hour north of the UW campus in Seattle.
Eason, a sophomore, entered the season as UGA’s starting quarterback, but was injured in the opener against Appalachian State. That injury kept him out a few weeks, allowing true freshman Jake Fromm to enter the starting lineup. Fromm never relinquished his spot and led the Bulldogs to an SEC title and the College Football Playoff title game, which UGA lost to Alabama on Monday night.
Eason appeared in just three games all season, completing 4-of-7 passes for 28 yards. In 2016, his freshman year, he assumed the starting role in Week 2 and threw for 2,430 yards, 16 touchdowns and eight interceptions while completing 55.1 percent of his passes.
If he lands at Washington as expected, he would have to sit out a year as Huskies QB Jake Browning plays his senior season. In 2019, Eason could compete to take over the starting spot as a redshirt junior. He would have two seasons of eligibility at UW.
After the Monday night’s game, Eason said no decision about a transfer has been made. From the Times:
In a brief interview after the Bulldogs’ 26-23 loss to Alabama on Monday night, Eason said he has not made a final decision about his future.
“Going to sit down with my family and figure that out,” Eason told The Seattle Times’ Stefanie Loh in Atlanta. “Right now, I’m just spending time with this team … and we’ll go from there.”
Asked if he has talked with UW coaches about a possible transfer, he said: “I have not. That’s illegal.”
In addition to Browning, Washington has four other quarterbacks on scholarship entering 2018: redshirt sophomore Daniel Bridge-Gadd, redshirt freshman Jake Haener and true freshman Jacob Sirmon and Colson Yankoff. Sirmon and Yankoff, both four-star class of 2018 recruits, enrolled early for the spring semester.
K.J. Carta-Samuels, the team’s backup in 2017, announced he would pursue a graduate transfer.
