Report: Doug Marrone not in danger of being fired as Jaguars' coach
The Jacksonville Jaguars entered Sunday 3-7 and mired in the NFL’s longest losing streak at six games, but coach Doug Marrone isn’t going anywhere, via a Sunday report.
Recent history playing a role
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Sunday morning that Marrone isn’t in danger of losing his job.
“They’ve lost six games in a row, but there’s a lot of other reasons to point to besides Marrone’s leadership,” Rapoport said. “Injuries at a variety of positions, they did get to the [AFC] title game last [season]. Marrone is in no trouble.”
The Jaguars have 13 players on injured reserve and four others who are unavailable this week due to injury.
Disappointing season not leading to snap decision
After Gus Bradley was fired near the end of the 2016 season, it didn’t take long for Jacksonville to name Marrone, who was an assistant head coach and offensive line coach, interim head coach and then hire him on a longer-term basis.
Last year, in his first full season in charge, the Jaguars were 10-6, the franchise’s first winning season in over a decade. They beat the Buffalo Bills in a low-scoring game in the wild-card round, upset the Pittsburgh Steelers on the road in the divisional round, and lost to the New England Patriots in the AFC championship, their first appearance in the conference title game since the 1999 season.
Jacksonville started the season 2-0, including a revenge drubbing of the Patriots in Week 2, but have won just once since.
