David Ortiz was released from the hospital yesterday, a source close to the family told ESPN. Ortiz will continue his rehabilitation at home, where he will be closely monitored by full-time nurses and will be visited regularly by his personal physician.
Ortiz had been hospitalized for 48 days after sustaining serious injuries after being shot in the lower back at a Santo Domingo nightclub.
He went into emergency surgery the night of the shooting in the Dominican Republic. His gallbladder and parts of his liver and intestines were removed during the initial six-hour surgery.
Ortiz was flown to Boston on June 10 to receive treatment. He’s since undergone two additional surgeries to further treat the initial injuries and deal with complications.
The most recent operation took place on July 11.
