The hiring makes Courtois the tenth coach in club history and the second since current Crew coach Wilfried Nancy left Montreal in December 2022.
"I'm honored to be joining the club and embarking on this new adventure with Montreal," Courtois said in a statement. "I'm want to continue the development work begun with our young players, while offering a dynamic style of play and emotions to the fans."
During Courtois' time with Crew 2, the Lyon, France, native took the team to the league's inaugural MLS Next Cup Final, winning the title in 2022, before advancing to the final again the following season. Courtois has played a role in the development of players such as Patrick Schulte and Mo Farsi, both starters for the Crew throughout their 2023 playoff run.
Courtois will be taking over for Hernan Losada, with whom Montreal parted ways after a 15-19-6 season. CF Montreal missed out on making the MLS Cup playoffs in 2023.
