Report: Colts make All-Pro Darius Leonard highest-paid ILB in NFL; 5-year extension includes $52.5M guaranteed

The Indianapolis Colts and All-Pro linebacker Darius Leonard have agreed to a five-year contract extension, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.

The deal will pay Leonard up to $99.25 million over the course of the extension with $52.5 million in guarantees, per the report. He's due $20 million annually during the first three years of the extension. The deal makes him the highest-paid inside linebacker in football in terms of total and annual value, surpassing Fred Warner's five-year, $95 million deal with the San Francisco 49ers.

Leonard, 26, has been one of the league's best defenders since he first stepped on an NFL field as a second-round draft pick in 2018. He led the NFL in tackles as a rookie while tallying seven sacks, four forced fumbles and two interceptions, earning Defensive Rookie of the Year honors. He's been named All-Pro in each of his three NFL seasons.

Young Colts stars collecting

The Colts also signed 25-year-old right tackle Braden Smith to a four-year extension this offseason reportedly worth up to $72.4 million with $42 million guaranteed. Meanwhile, 25-year-old guard Quenton Nelson will soon be due a market-setting deal after being named First-team All-Pro in each of this first three seasons. The Colts picked up the fifth-year option on his rookie contract this offseason. Leonard, selected in the same draft as Nelson, didn't have a fifth-year team option on his contract as a second-round pick.

Excitement for the upcoming Indianapolis season has dampened a bit after the Colts finished 11-5 and made the playoffs last season. Nelson and new quarterback arrival Carson Wentz are both expected to miss a significant portion of the season with foot injuries.
