Report: Buccaneers' Jason Pierre-Paul suffered fractured neck in car crash

A few days ago, TMZ reported and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers confirmed that Jason Pierre-Paul had been in an early morning one-car accident in South Florida.

Pierre-Paul was not cited, and TMZ reported that he hadn’t been speeding.

But it may have been a little more than a garden-variety fender-bender.

Report: Pierre-Paul has fractured neck

On Tuesday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter, citing sources, reported that Pierre-Paul suffered a potentially season-ending fractured neck in the accident.

The veteran pass-rusher will visit neck specialists this week to get their opinions and see if there’s hope to save this season, Schefter added.

Further, Pierre-Paul will “likely” need surgery to repair the damage to his neck.

In a statement on the day of the accident, Buccaneers’ general manager Jason Licht said that Pierre-Paul had been evaluated at a hospital and released.

Coming off solid season

Now 30, Pierre-Paul is coming off a solid season: he recorded 12.5 sacks in 16 starts for Tampa Bay last season, his highest sack total since 2014.

Back then he was still a member of the New York Giants and hadn’t yet suffered the gruesome Fourth of July injury that caused extensive damage to his right hand.

He was traded to the Buccaneers in March 2018.
