Reliving Kyler Murray's top moments with OU football, from backup QB to Heisman Trophy

NORMAN — Kyler Murray made jaw-dropping plays a regularity during his 2018 Heisman Trophy-winning season.

With both his arm and his legs, Murray made play after play that season to become the second consecutive Heisman winner among OU quarterbacks and seventh Sooner overall to win college football most-coveted award.

In 14 games with the Sooners in 2018, Murray completed 260 of 377 passes for 4,361 yards with 42 touchdowns and only seven interceptions. He added 1,001 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns on 140 carries.

On Saturday, Murray joins Baker Mayfield and the other Sooners’ Heisman winners with a statue just east of Gaylord Family — Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.

In honor of Murray’s return, here’s a look back at the 10 best moments of Murray’s time as a Sooner:

1. Kyler Murray to Grant Calcaterra for Big 12 title

Plenty of the other plays on this list highlight Murray’s arm strength, his speed or his elusiveness. The top play, though, is all about Murray’s touch. With the Sooners leading by five with just more than two minutes remaining in the Big 12 Championship Game against Texas, Murray lofted a pass to Grant Calcaterra in the end zone that was perfectly placed. Calcaterra hauled in the 18-yard completion one-handed to give the Sooners a revenge win over the Longhorns.

2. Cotton Bowl comeback

The Sooners trailed Texas 45-24 after three quarters and 45-31 with just more than five minutes left and the ball in their own territory. On a draw play, Murray dipped to his left and it was quickly clear he would at least pick up a first down and get in Longhorns’ territory. A stutter-step near midfield gave him a sliver of room down the sideline and Murray showed off his acceleration, finishing off a 67-yard touchdown run that kept OU in it.

3. Fourth-down heroics

Late in the 2018 season, the Sooners found themselves in yet another shootout with West Virginia. With fourth-and-5 and OU up by three, 59-56, Murray used his legs to buy time for his receivers to get open, then found a sliding CeeDee Lamb for an 8-yard gain that virtually sealed the victory.

4. Long bomb to Marquise Brown

Murray’s arm strength was well known by the time the Sooners opened Big 12 play early in 2018 but it was never more apparent than early in the game against Iowa State, when he hit Marquise Brown for a 75-yard touchdown late in the first quarter. Murray’s seemingly effortless pass was in the air for more than 50 yards.

5. Go Kyler, Beat Army

The Sooners were in a tight battle late in the second quarter against Army when the quarterback dropped back, and soon took off running after not finding an open receiver. Murray evaded a tackle around the 30-yard line and then darted down the sidelines to give OU the halftime lead in a game it eventually won in overtime.

6. Bedlam bomb

For all the offensive numbers the Sooners put up in the 2018 Bedlam game, Murray was held fairly well in check — relatively. But late in the first half, Murray fired a dart of a pass to Marquise Brown for a 51-yard touchdown to put the Sooners up 13 in a game they eventually won 48-47. It was the only touchdown Murray accounted for in the victory.

7. No chance to stop him vs. Kansas

Kansas’ defense in 2018 wasn’t exactly stout, but Murray made a lot of defenses look silly that year. Early in the fourth quarter of an unexpectedly tight game, Murray sprinted through the line of scrimmage and straight up the heart of the Jayhawks’ defense for a 75-yard touchdown run. Like he did several times in his career, Murray slowed up at one point, nearly mimicking a slide, before turning on the jets and burning a defender to finish off the run.

8. Playoff showdown

Late in the third quarter of the Sooners’ College Football Playoff showdown against Alabama, OU needed an offensive jolt. Trailing 31-13, Murray dropped back and heaved a 49-yard touchdown pass to Charleston Rambo to get the Sooners back in the game. Murray hit another touchdown pass in the fourth quarter, and scored another himself, but the Sooners fell 45-34.

9. This way and that

It didn’t go for a touchdown or even a ton of yardage, but Murray’s 15-yard run in the first quarter against Florida Atlantic in the 2018 season opener was a jaw dropper. Murray dropped back, then dropped back even farther to try to buy himself time. Finally pulling the ball down, Murray seemed contained by four defenders near the line of scrimmage but he slammed on the brakes, moved backward and found room around the end. He nearly stumbled, but recovered to not only get the first down but seven more yards and turn in the first sensational play of what became a sensational season.

10. Quick strike in first start

Murray wasn’t going to supplant Baker Mayfield as the Sooners’ starter so he was Mayfield’s backup in 2017. It didn’t take long for Murray to show off just how special he could be. With Mayfield benched to start a late-season game against West Virginia — after his antics the game before at Kansas — Murray showed out. On the game’s first play from scrimmage, Murray ran 66 yards to set up a Rodney Anderson touchdown run a play later. Mayfield was back in on the next series, but Murray definitely left an impression.
