Real Madrid is world soccer’s reigning superpower, but the volatility that makes them great is now working against them. And they’d better stem the tide soon.

Los Blancos dropped more points at home on Saturday, drawing 1-1 against Levante and finishing the game with 10 men after Marcelo’s irrational late red card.

They also lost star striker Karim Benzema, who suffered a leg muscle injury midway through the first half and had to be substituted off.

Real Madrid was caught off-guard by Levante’s Ivan Alvarez, commonly known as Ivi, in the 12th minute. Ivi left Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal spinning in circles by alertly stepping to a long throw-in that reached the six-yard box and touching it home to open the scoring:

Pressed into urgency by both the deficit and Benzema’s injury, Real Madrid answered when Lucas Vazquez swept home a loose ball off a header by Sergio Ramos:

Beyond that, however, Real Madrid either lacked imagination or the finishing product, which is nigh inexcusable for this assemblage of talent. Gareth Bale’s touch let him down late in the first half when he broke free behind the defense, and Toni Kroos would have won the game in stoppage time had his curling shot found the net instead of the post.

Marcelo had a look at goal in the 89th minute, but after his shot was blocked, momentary frustration must have set in as the Brazilian winger took a hostile tumble into the feet of Levante’s Jefferson Lerma and saw a straight red:

The draw means Real Madrid has taken only two points from two home games thus far, and while the La Liga campaign is barely in its infantile stages, the blistering paces typically set by Real Madrid, Barcelona or Atletico Madrid treat such stumbles harshly in the final assessment.

What’s more, Cristiano Ronaldo is still one game away from returning from the suspension he received for his actions during the Spanish Super Cup last month, while Ramos was returning from suspension himself. And Marcelo is virtually guaranteed to miss at least a couple future matches once La Liga takes a closer look at his moment of madness.

Real Madrid will have to hope for good news on Benzema’s injury, because everything else seems to be falling apart around the club.

The time is there to fix it. But it won’t be forever.
