Ravens announce signing of QB Robert Griffin III

Here’s one we didn’t expect to see: Baltimore Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome announced during a Wednesday news conference that the team has signed Robert Griffin III to a one-year contract.

ESPN’s Jamison Hensley tweeted that Griffin “was initially brought in by the Ravens to throw to some receivers during a workout. That led to another visit with the team. The sides reached a deal with him late Tuesday.”

Griffin becomes the third quarterback on the Baltimore roster, joining Joe Flacco and Josh Woodrum.

“We’re excited about it,” Newsome said, via Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun. “We felt like we needed a No. 2 quarterback. I’m really feeling like we got a steal. I felt like he really wanted to be a Raven.”

Griffin is seemingly happy for the chance as well, tweeting, “#PlayLikeARaven.”

The second overall pick in the 2012 draft, Griffin hasn’t played in well over a year. His last game was as a member of the Cleveland Browns, in the 2016 regular-season finale.

But Griffin was the starting quarterback the last time the Browns recorded a win, on Dec. 24, 2016. He was 17-for-25 for 164 yards with no touchdowns as Cleveland beat the Chargers, 20-17. It was the Browns’ only win of the year.
