New year, new rankings? See which girls basketball teams are at the top of the list
New year, new rankings? At this point in the season, teams are usually begin to separate from the pack and make things a little easier. That's not the case here. After the No. 1 teams in the big- and small-school rankings, things are much murkier. And that's because so many teams have been so impressive.
Statement Win of the Week: Archbishop Wood
The Vikings are defending state champions and started the season with the seven straight wins. So what could qualify as a ‘statement’ win? How about their 46-44 victory against national powerhouse McDonogh, recently ranked No. 19 in the country. Lauren Greer scored the game-winner, on a dish from Emily Knouse, who made a stellar pass over top of a defender.
Team of the Week: CB East
The Patriots had a solid 16-9 season last year, and were expected to improve this year. But they’ve surpassed expectations with a 9-1 start. Their last four games include their first loss, and it was quite a shock, 48-15 to CR South. But it was how they responded that showed the Patriots are true contenders, as they went to Florida and won all three tournament games, scoring an average of 58 points.
Team on the Rise: William Tennent
William Tennent (5-6) has had an up-and-down season with a very young roster. Last weekend, the Panthers had their best showing of the season and won the Upper Merion Holiday Tournament championship. In two games, they outscored opponents 119-66 and have now won three straight. Sophomore Avery Kocur scored 23 points in the first game, and 24 in the second.
Big-School Rankings (Class 5A, 6A)
1. Archbishop Wood (7-1)
The Vikings remain firmly ensconced in the top spot; it will take something wild to happen for that to change. They did experience their first loss of the season, playing a back-to-back against Red Bank Catholic. The night before, Ava Renninger scored 21 points to lead Wood over nationally-ranked McDonogh.
2. Neshaminy (8-2)
Neshaminy went 2-1 in Florida at the Tampa Bay Invitational. Lola Ibarrondo had a great showing, with games of 20 points (a season-high), 16 points and 15 points.
3. CB East (9-1)
What a couple weeks it was for the Patriots. After their first loss of the season, against Council Rock South, they headed to Florida and went 3-0 to win the Tampa Bay Invitational. Anna Barry had 29 points in the second game, and Jess Lockwood had 24 points in their first game.
4. Pennsbury (6-3)
The Falcons followed a dominant performance against Council Rock North with an unexpected 62-51 loss to North Penn. Daniella McDonald scored 15 points in both games, and has reached double digits in her last four games.
5. CR South (6-3)
The Golden Hawks only played two games since Dec. 19, but one was a shocking 48-15 win over CB East, who was undefeated at the time. They followed with a high-scoring 70-57 win over Nazareth, with Fiona Reckner scoring 20 points.
6. Gwynedd Mercy (8-1)
The Monarchs had an impressive victory over Conwell-Egan, followed by winning the Akens Holiday Tournament. Sophomore Emilia Coleman had 23 points in a 64-40 win against Wyoming Valley West and was named tournament MVP.
7. North Penn (7-2)
The Knights have been on a roll. Since a loss to 9-1 CB East, they had a statement win against Pennsbury, defeating the Falcons 62-51. Other than CB East, their only loss was on opening day to Inter-Ac leader Germantown Academy. Caleigh Sperling has scored 12 or more points in every game this season.
8. Abington (7-2)
The Ghosts have been dominating in their most recent games, outsourcing opponents 239-115 in their last four games, all wins. Mikiaya Durham has scored 12 or more points in seven games, while Piper McGinley, known most for her excellent defense, has scored an average of 13 points over the last three games.
9. Upper Moreland (7-3)
It was a quiet couple weeks for the Golden Bears, who went 1-1 in their two games. Holly Gohl scored 17 points and Mikel Lancit had 15 in a 53-37 win over Phoenixville.

Small-School Rankings (Class 1A-4A)
1. Lansdale Catholic (8-0)
Some things never change, and the Crusaders being at the top of rankings is likely one of them. They averaged 64 points per game in three wins at holiday tournaments, while giving up just 27.
2. Germantown Academy (9-2)
The Patriots experienced their second loss, but that didn’t hurt their ranking at all. They remain in the second spot again after a close loss (42-37) to Cardinal O’Hara, a 6A team that played in the PIAA state championship game last year. They have a tough matchup against Audenried this week.
3. George School (7-3)
The Cougars were dealt two straight losses, one by West Catholic and the other by New Jersey powerhouse Trenton Catholic. Freshmen Zamiya Lowe and Maya Ravindranathan have been impressive - Lowe had 14 points and 10 rebounds against WC, and Ravindranathan had 14 points against TC. The Cougars schedule doesn’t get much easier, as they have games against Friends Central and Abington coming up.
4. Conwell-Egan (4-4)
The Eagles, after starting 3-0, had the misfortune to face three teams with a combined 27-1 record over the past two weeks. And two of their next three are against Archbishop Wood and Lansdale Catholic. Lily Milewski, Brianna McFadden, Brooke McFadden and freshman Brianna Jackson have all been playing at a high level, and Milewski has four 20-plus point games.
5. New Hope-Solebury (5-3)
The Lions (3A) picked up a win against Hatboro-Horsham (6A) before enjoying a long holiday break. Their next four games are all against Class 6A teams, including Abington (7-2) and Plymouth Whitemarsh (6-3).
6. Faith Christian (6-3)
The Lions sit atop the District One Class 2A standings and have lost just one game since December 7 (to Villa Joseph Marie).
