Rams K Greg Zuerlein expects to be fully healthy for Super Bowl
Despite a left foot injury, Los Angeles Rams kicker Greg Zuerlein said he expects to be “good to go” for the Super Bowl against the New England Patriots next week in Atlanta.
Zuerlein initially suffered an injury while warming up after halftime during the NFC championship against the Saints in New Orleans, when he hit a steel plate awkwardly. Since then, he has been working to get his plant foot back to full strength.
“Yeah, hit something hard in the ground. Just warming up at halftime, landed on something that didn’t give as much as turf and then that’s when it started hurting,” Zuerlein said, via the Rams’ website. “But, hopefully, a few more days of treatment and it’ll be good to go.”
He still finished the game, having hit a 48-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter and then a 57-yard game-winning field goal in overtime.
So how much pain was Zuerlein actually in?
“I don’t really know,” Zuerlein said. “It hurt, but not enough to stop me from playing, obviously. I guess that’s really all I can tell you. It really wasn’t anything special about it, just get the job done.”
Zuerlein, who missed time with a groin injury this season, made 27 of 31 field goals and missed just one extra point all season.
Barring any setbacks in his recovery, Zuerlein will likely be a critical piece against the Patriots. And the way he has played all season long — and in the playoffs, especially — head coach Sean McVay knows he can count on his kicker.
“He’s a great guy, but as soon as you cross the 50, you legitimately feel like you’re in a position to come away with points,” McVay said. “I just think his resolve, his mental toughness — watching the way that he handled being out earlier in the year and how he was so supportive of the guys that were in his role, I think demonstrated a security that exists on his part. But he’s a really good, productive player. And he’s been outstanding.”
