Quenton Nelson reaches sixth straight Pro Bowl as Colts also have 4 alternates

INDIANAPOLIS -- Quenton Nelson is headed to yet another Pro Bowl.

The Colts left guard has made his sixth Pro Bowl, the league announced Wednesday when rosters were revealed. Nelson has now made it the all-star game in all six seasons of his pro career.

Indianapolis also placed four players on the alternates list in wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr., center Ryan Kelly, linebacker Zaire Franklin and defensive tackle DeForest Buckner.

Nelson has a chance to be the Colts' lone Pro Bowl representative in Las Vegas for a second season in a row.

Nelson has started all 16 games and paved the way for a Colts offense that ranks 13th in rushing yards, ninth in total touchdowns and seventh in passing plays of 40 yards or more. He's provided ample protection for Gardner Minshew to step in for an injured Anthony Richardson, as he's allowed just two sacks on 616 passing snaps, according to Sports Info Solutions.

Nelson has also been instrumental in the growth of second-year left tackle Bernhard Raimann. He's helped key the rebirth of the Colts offensive line, a key reason why Indianapolis is in position to reach the playoffs with a win over the Texans on Saturday.

Nelson should have a chance at his fourth season of first-team All-Pro recognition. Despite playing on the interior of the line, his play has supported the four-year, $80 million contract the Colts handed him prior to last season.

Pittman, Franklin, Kelly and Buckner all had their own cases for the Pro Bowl.

Pittman is tied for sixth in the NFL in receptions and 13th in receiving yards despite playing only briefly with Richardson at quarterback before Minshew took over. Pittman's consistency has started to show, as he's about to lead the Colts in receiving for the third straight season, and he is the only receiver in the NFL with 10 games of at least eight catches.

On Saturday, Franklin broke his own franchise tackles record. The sixth-year pro is up to 170 tackles, which leads the NFL. As a team captain, he's led a defense with two rookie outside cornerbacks to the doorstep of the playoffs, even after Shaquille Leonard's fallout at his position.

Kelly has started 13 games this season but has been the clear leader of an offensive line that has had a resurgent season. He was hoping to make his fourth career Pro Bowl appearance.

Buckner just posted his sixth straight season with at least seven sacks, something only Myles Garrett of the Browns and Chris Jones of the Chiefs have in common. Buckner has yet again been one of the most double-teamed linemen in the game, but that attention has created opportunities for other members of a Colts pass rush that has an Indianapolis-record 49 sacks, good for fifth in the NFL.

The four alternates can make the game if the players above them either opt out for injury reasons or because their teams reach the Super Bowl, which is played the following weekend.
