Quarterbacks headline the Steelers big storylines for the upcoming season
In just one week the Pittsburgh Steelers will kick off the regular season against the Atlanta Falcons on the road. It's been a wild and wacky offseason for the Steelers from all the drama at quarterback to the ongoing saga of wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk that never amounted to anything.
As the season goes on, there are many things we want to keep an eye on but here are the big storylines that will not only be the most interesting but will have everything to do with the success of the 2024 season.
How long until we see Justin Fields?
Russell Wilson was named the starter for the start of the season but we will keep a close eye on not only how the team works Justin Fields into the lineup in special packages but if Wilson and the offense struggles, will the coaches pull the trigger and go with the younger, more athletic Fields?
Offensive line injuries
The Steelers could go into the start of the season minus offensive tackle Troy Fautanu, guard Isaac Seumalo and backup offensive tackle Dylan Cook. This leaves this unit incredibly thin, particularly at offensive tackle. Taking it a step further, when Fautanu is healthy we want to see how quickly he is ready and which offensive tackle does he replace?
Wide receiver depth
Just because the season starts, doesn't mean the Steelers won't continue to try to improve the wide receiver position if they see they need help. There will be veteran free agents available as well as players for whom the Steelers could trade if the price is right.
Is tight end the new wide receiver?
We were promised lots of tight ends in the passing offense when Arthur Smith was hired as the new offensive coordinator but in the preseason, this was not the case. The talent is there to build the passing offense around the tight end position and they might just have to.
Another long season for the defense
You notice the first four storylines here center on the offense. This puts so much pressure on an excellent defense that we've seen wear down over the course of a season. No defense is good enough to continue to carry a bad offense and this will be something to track as the grind of that second half of the season hits.
