Preseason Poll! Who do you think will be our Girls Basketball Player of the Year?

The winter season began on December 1. That means it's time to get hyped up for hoops again! We want to know who you think should be the Courier/Intell Girls Basketball Player of the Year for the 2023-24 season! These candidates were at the top of their game last season, and will look to reach new heights this year.

Girls Basketball Player of the Year 2022-23: Gabby Casey, Lansdale Catholic

  • Then: Casey finished her high school career as the school’s all-time leading scorer – both boys and girls – breaking the record of 1,347 points. She averaged 21 points, 8 rebounds and 4 steals per game while leading the Crusaders to their first Catholic League Championship and PIAA Class 4A state title. She was named Gatorade PA Girls Player of the Year and MaxPreps PA High School Basketball Player of the Year.

  • Now: The St. Joseph’s University freshman’s college career is off to a fine start. In the Hawks’ win over UPenn, Casey played 19 minutes, scoring 16 points with three assists, two rebounds and one steal. She shot 5-for-6 from the field and was 5-for-5 from the free throw line. She had 15 points in a win against Temple, and was named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week for two consecutive weeks.

Girls Basketball Player of the Year 2021-22: Ryanne Allen, Archbishop Wood

  • Then: After leading the Vikings to two PIAA Class 4A state championships, Allen, who averaged 17 points and five rebounds, was named PA Sports Writers Class 4A Player of the Year.

  • Now: Allen started seven games as a freshman for Vanderbilt University last season and earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors. She averaged 6.4 points and 2.5 rebounds per game. This year, Allen has helped Vanderbilt to a 5-0 start. She had nine points, six rebounds and four assists in 14 minutes in a win over Kennesaw State.

Girls Basketball Player of the Year 2020-21: Kaitlyn Orihel, Archbishop Wood

  • Then: In addition to leading the Vikings to a state championship when she scored 21 points in the second half of the 44-34 title game win against Villa Maria, Orihel was named Gatorade PA Player of the Year and PA Sports Writers Class 4A Player of the Year. She also led the Vikings to their first PCL title since 2016, scoring 12 points in the second half. Orihel finished the season with 1,426 career points, breaking the school’s record of 1,417 points.

  • Now: Orihel is in her third season at Villanova; she played in 32 out of 33 games as a freshman and all 37 games last season, including a career-high 28 minutes in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. In the Wildcats’ first game this season, Orihel had 7 points, 2 steals and 2 rebounds in 14 minutes in a win against Temple and 14 points in a victory over Wake Forest.
