Power Rankings: Which area basketball, soccer programs make the polls ahead of postseason

The temperatures may be dropping in the Big Bend, but the winter sports action is heating up ahead of the postseason.

With both soccer and basketball heading towards the conclusion of the regular season, the area's top teams are making waves ahead of the playoffs. From clashes between Big Bend powers, games against top teams in the state and rivalry showdowns, there is plenty of action ahead of the final game of the season.

With that said, let's dive into the Big Bend power rankings!

Boy's Basketball

1. Rickards (12-5)

Previous Ranking: 1

The Raiders hold on to the top spot in the power rankings after a 2-1 week that saw the team pick up wins over Chiles and Riverside, falling to powerhouse Blanch Ely. With the play of Benjamin Plummer, who scored 64 points in three games, Romie Cosby and Randall Pompey elevating the team's play ahead of the postseason, Rickards has cemented itself top of the rankings

2. Florida High (12-8)

Previous Ranking: 2

Staying second in the rankings, Florida High is coming off a strong showing at the Sun Bash Orlando tournament over the weekend, taking down Arts (New Jersey) and falling to Florida power Winter Haven. Including a win over Godby midweek, the Seminoles went 2-1 and have a firm hold on the two spot in the power rankings ahead of the postseason.

3. Lincoln (12-3)

Previous Ranking: 3

No movement for Lincoln in this week's rankings, going 1-1 last week, with a win over St. John Paul II and a loss to Godby, ending a nine-game winning streak. The Trojans are still one of the area's top teams and with a roster that features multiple players capable of scoring big on any given night, the Trojans are a tough team to beat.

4. Munore (11-5)

Previous Ranking: 4

The Bobcats stay in fourth place in the rankings, taking down St. John Paul II and L.E.A.D. Academy in a 2-0 week of action. Munroe snapped a three-game losing streak with the two victories and with the reliable play of Karlton Knight and Leith Kenon helping lead the team, the Bobcats are in a solid spot ahead of the end of the regular season.

5. Godby (9-6)

Previous Ranking: 5

The Cougars stay at fifth after a 1-2 week of action, beating Lincoln and falling to Florida High and Blanch Ely over the weekend. Sophomores Devin Anderson and Jaden Staten have taken a step up in their production during the backend of the season, and with junior Mekhi Butler leading the Cougars scoring output, the trio has the team in good shape.

Girls Basketball

1. Rickards (13-4)

Previous Ranking: 1

The Raiders remain ranked as the top team in the area after two wins last week, beating Florida High and Gainsville, extending the team's win streak to five games. It has been a great season for Rickards, who are in a position to make a lot of noise in the postseason with junior Genesis Henry leading the way.

2. Lincoln (13-3)

Previous Ranking: 4

The Trojans take the biggest leap in the rankings, jumping from fourth to second after three wins last week, beating FAMU DRS, Madison County and Munroe, extending the team's win streak to four games. The trio of Amari Johnson, Jamiya Brown and Jamia Brown have been crucial to Lincoln's success this year, and are likely going to be a big part of a deep postseason run.

3. Madison County (10-4)

Previous Ranking: 2

The Cowboys drop one spot after a 1-1 week, beating Columbia and losing to Lincoln in a week of competitive action. Led by Janiyah McKnight, Madison County is still one of the area's most competitive teams ahead of the postseason, where the Cowboys hope for a good run.

4. Godby (11-5)

Previous Ranking: 3

The Cougars are down one spot in the rankings after a 1-1 week, beating Gadsden County and falling on the road to Rutherford. Winning three of the last five games, Godby is primed for a nice run to end the season ahead of the playoffs with it's young roster finding form.

5. Florida High (7-12)

Previous Ranking: 5

There is no movement for the Seminoles in this week's rankings, as the team stays ranked fifth after a tough week of three losses, losing to powers Rickards, Andrew Jackson and Forest. With a season that hasn't gone the way Florida High would have wanted, there is still good potential in the squad with the postseason approaching.

Boys Soccer

1. Chiles

Previous Ranking: 1

The Timberwolves hold on to the top spot in the rankings after a dominant week, beating both Leon and Florida High with shutout victories. One of the top teams in the state, Chiles is primed to make a long run into the postseason with a potential shot at a state championship a realistic goal for the Timberwolves.

2. Maclay

Previous Ranking: 2

The Marauders are right behind Chiles, one of the top teams in the state and like the Timberwolves, are coming off a dominant week of action, beating Community Christian, Williston and Gainsville. Winning the three games by a combined score of 16-2, Maclay is one of the Big Bend's premier programs.

3. Leon

Previous Ranking: 3

The Lions come in ranked third after a week of one win, one tie, and one loss, falling to Chiles in a thrilling matchup between the rivals. Leon is a balanced team with different avenues of attack, which makes them one of the Big Bend's most dangerous teams as we head toward the postseason.

4. Florida High

Previous Ranking: 4

Coming off a 2-1 week, the Seminoles come in unmoved from the first rankings, sitting fourth after wins against Wakulla and South Walton, and a loss to Chiles. With district play right around the corner, Florida High is looking to hit hot form at the right time to possibly go head-to-head with Maclay.

1. Lincoln

Previous Ranking: 2

It's a new number one at the top of the rankings as the Trojans take the top spot away from the Timberwolves. In what has been a battle between the two teams all season, Lincoln picked up its second win of the year over Chiles and snapped a four-game winless streak as the team heads full speed toward the playoffs.

2. Chiles

Previous Ranking: 1

Coming in ranked second is Chiles, after falling to Lincoln for the second time this season, the team's only loss, the Timberwolves are a top team in the area and the state. Beating Maclay and drawing St. Johns County Day before the loss to Lincoln, the Timberwolves are looking sharp ahead of postseason play.

3. Florida High

Previous Ranking: 3

The young Seminoles come in third, unmoved from the last rankings, after an 8-0 win against Rickards last week. With district play right around the corner, a chance at a district title is on the cards for Florida High as the youthful roster has high expectations for the season.

4. Wakulla

Previous Rank: 4

The War Eagles remain ranked fourth, and it's primetime showdown on Tuesday, Jan. 9 with Florida High was rescheduled to Jan. 18 due to severe weather. For Wakulla, there is a legit chance it could be competing for a district title in a few weeks time.
