Pop Isaacs continues hot streak as Texas Tech basketball pushes past Oklahoma State: 3 takeaways

Pop Isaacs continued his recent hot streak to help the Texas Tech basketball team take down Oklahoma State 90-73 on Tuesday night in United Supermarkets Arena.

After scoring more than 20 points just twice as a freshman, Isaacs achieved that feat for the fourth game in a row, finishing with a game-high 24. All five starters reached double figures in the victory for the Red Raiders.

The win was Texas Tech's eighth win in a row as the Red Raiders moved to 13-2 overall and 2-0 in Big 12 play.

Cold start didn't set back the Red Raiders

Playing in front its biggest home crowd of the season, the Red Raiders came out either flat, nervous or both. Both ends of the floor were at fault during the cold stretch.

Oklahoma State hit nine of its first 12 shots and good a 20-11 lead.

After that timeout, the Red Raiders came alive, going on what wound up being a 19-2 run over the course of six-plus minutes to flip the game.

It was a similar pattern to the Texas game where Texas Tech took control of the game by getting to the basket, which opened passing lanes and, eventually, the 3-point line. Tech took the momentum all the way to halftime where it held a 40-31 advantage.

Darrion Williams does a bit of everything

As the Red Raiders found their groove in the first half, much of it was because of Darrion Williams.

Known for doing a little bit of everything his freshman year at Nevada, Williams showed that kind of versatility over the first 20 minutes. By the break, he had eight points, six of Tech's 13 total rebounds and three of the team's seven assists. He played the most minutes of anyone in the half for Tech and it was for a good reason.

Fouls, big lead muddy up the second half

The Red Raiders continued to push the Cowboys around for the second half, extending the lead to 21 with 9:49 left on the clock.

All that pushing eventually got Texas Tech into some foul trouble. With 3:43 left in regulation, Chance McMillian fouled John-Michael Wright on a 3-point attempt (the third such infraction of the half) that put the Red Raiders at 14 fouls for the half and 18 for the game.

Tech still held a 78-64 lead at the final media timeout and was able to coast to the victory.

What's next?

The Red Raiders stick around town for a bit by hosting Kansas State on Saturday at 3 p.m. in United Supermarkets Arena. The Wildcats knocked off West Virginia 81-67 on Tuesday night and are now 12-3 overall and 2-0 in Big 12 play.
