Police say Georgia LB arrested after racing teammate. Another player arrested after crash

Georgia football linebacker Smael Mondon was arrested Wednesday night after he and a teammate began to race side by side going eastbound on West Broad Street, according to Athens-Clarke County police.

Mondon kept accelerating at a high rate of speed in the 2022 Dodge Charger he was driving, changed lanes in front of the other vehicle and continued driving at “an unsafe speed,” according to a police incident report obtained Thursday afternoon by the Athens Banner-Herald.

His teammate, identified as freshman defensive back Demello Jones, slowed his 2022 Porsche Panamera down, possibly be because he saw the police officer, the report surmised.

Mondon, a senior from Dallas, Ga., was charged with racing on highways/streets and reckless driving after being pulled over at 1000 W. Broad Street—the former address of The Varsity.

Police said Mondon was going 75 miles per hour in a 45 zone. The officer observed the vehicles in front of him at about 10 p.m. at the intersection of W. Broad and The Plaza.

Mondon denied racing and said he did not know Jones, according to the report. Jones pulled over and told police he was checking on his “teammate.”

Jones, from Swainsboro, was cited for racing, but not arrested because he voluntarily pulled over. Mondon leaned over and told Jones “do not say anything in the group chat," the report said.

Mondon’s arrest came the same day Georgia running back Trevor Etienne pled no contest in Athens Muncipal Court to reckless driving and guilty to failure to maintain lane and underage possession of alcohol. A DUI charge was dismissed from the March 24 incident.

Another Georgia football player, redshirt freshman offensive lineman Bo Hughley, was arrested Tuesday night by UGA police after an incident on the River Road loop at 6:27 p.m, according to the UGA online police log. It said the “charges resulted from the investigation of a single vehicle accident."

No further details were yet available.

Hughley missed spring practices after shoulder surgery.

Georgia athletics did not comment after the most recent arrests, but coach Kirby Smart is slated to speak to reporters on Tuesday in Dallas at SEC Media Days.
