Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Andrew McCutchen suffered a knee injury in the first inning of their game against the San Diego Padres at PetCo Park and had to be helped off the field.

After being walked in his first at bat in the opening inning, Jean Segura popped the ball up right to Padres second baseman Ian Kinsler.

Kinsler, after letting the ball drop to draw McCutchen off the bag, quickly threw it to first base to turn the double play. McCutchen, while attempting to get back to first, appeared to tweak his left knee — and could be seen grabbing it mid-run before falling to the ground.

He had to be helped off the field and back into the dugout, where he could barely get down the stairs. After the game, Phillies manager Gabe Kapler characterized the injury as a sprain, though he said McCutchen would undergo an MRI on Tuesday.

McCutchen is in his first season with the Phillies after spending last year with both the San Francisco Giants and the New York Yankees. He currently boasts a league-high 42 walks in 261 plate appearances this season, and is hitting .256 through 58 games with 10 home runs.

Jay Bruce entered the game for McCutchen, making his Phillies debut after being traded from the Seattle Mariners.

After picking up a 1-0 lead early, the Padres surged ahead in the sixth inning behind a grand slam from Manny Machado, which propelled them to a 8-2 win.
