Philadelphia 76ers sign David Jones of Memphis basketball to two-way contract | Reports
The Philadelphia 76ers signed former Memphis basketball star David Jones to a two-way contract Thursday, according to multiple reports. Jones was not selected in the 2024 NBA Draft.
The 6-foot-6 wing was the Tigers' leading scorer and rebounder at 7.6 per game last season. His 21.8 points per game was the sixth-best average in the country and his 79 made 3-pointers are tied for fifth-most in school history. Last season, Jones became the first Division I player since Zion Williamson in 2018-19 to average at least 21 points, seven rebounds and two steals per game.
An explosive, dynamic player, the Dominican Republic native began his career at DePaul, then transferred to St. John's before joining the Tigers and coach Penny Hardaway. While Jones put together a season to remember individually (earning first-team all-AAC honors), it did not translate to overall team success. Memphis started the season 15-2, reaching as high as No. 10 in the Associated Press Top 25 in January. But the Tigers faltered after that, finishing 7-8 and missing the NCAA Tournament.

Jones had one season of eligibility remaining and contemplated a return to Memphis. But he announced he was keeping his name in the draft just hours before the deadline. In the course of the pre-draft process, Jones worked out for a host of teams, including the Charlotte Hornets, Dallas Mavericks, Portland Trail Blazers, Milwaukee Bucks, Detroit Pistons, New York Knicks, Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Lakers.
