PFF's lowest-graded Saints players from Cardinals preseason game
The New Orleans Saints didn't play a perfect game in their preseason win over the Arizona Cardinals, and Pro Football Focus has shined a light on their lowest-rated Saints players from the game. Now, obviously PFF's player grades are not perfect. They're nothing more than a starting-point for serious analysis. So we're digging a little deeper to find why some guys graded out better than others and what they did well on Saturday.
Here are the lowest-graded players on both sides of the ball who played at least 33% of snaps (14 on offense, 18 on defense) against the Cardinals:
CB Mac McCain III: 29.3 on 28 snaps
McCain was picked on in coverage. PFF charting found that he gave up six receptions on six targets for 82 yards, 20 of them allowed after the catch. The Saints have a lot of corners in camp right now and he can't afford another bad game.
RT Jesse Davis: 35.0 on 31 snaps
Davis struggled at right tackle, drawing a false start penalty and giving up three quarterback pressures. The Saints badly need a veteran to step up on the right side as a viable backup for Trevor Penning.
OL Landon Young: 35.9 on 29 snaps
The Saints tried Young out at both right guard (15) and right tackle (14), but he was also fouled for a false start and yielded a pressure. He's looking for a role in a contract year.
RT Trevor Penning: 41.5 on 24 snaps
Penning's debut at right tackle was very disappointing. He drew a 10-yard holding penalty and regressed into a lot of bad habits at his new position, consistently losing his footing letting leverage get away from him in the process. He's got to play better and prove he isn't a lost cause.
LB Khaleke Hudson: 43.1 on 29 snaps
Hudson tackles well, and he had a sack against the Cardinals, but was beaten on a 14-yard reception in coverage. Half of those yards were given up after the catch as he struggled to rally to the ball. He might be at his best closer to the line of scrimmage.
LG Mark Evans II: 46.1 on 28 snaps
Evans was signed off the street last week and immediately played the most snaps at left guard (28), but he gave up two pressures in pass protection. Every rep matters for guys at the bottom of the depth chart like him.
LB Anfernee Orji: 47.7 on 33 snaps
Orji led the linebackers in snaps played (33) but he graded poorly in each phase: pass rushing, run defense, and pass coverage. He also missed aa tackle, which was a big problem for him last summer in the preseason.
TE Dallin Holker: 48.9 on 38 snaps
The Saints took a long look at Holker as a blocker on run plays, which was expected. He did reasonably well on zone concepts (earning a 57.6 on seven snaps) but PFF was less-impressed with his work on gap blocking reps (49.2 on 10 of them). His receiving grade was a mediocre 51.2 but that doesn't line up with his production. Holker caught all four of his targets, gaining 35 yards (19 of them after the catch) and converting a pair of first downs.
DT Kendal Vickers: 49.2 on 39 snaps
Vickers tied for the second-most pass rush snaps (26) with Khristian Boyd and Niko Lalos, but of those three players he was the only one to not pressure the quarterback. He isn't making a strong case for the last spot in the defensive tackle rotation.
DE Isaiah Foskey: 51.2 on 55 snaps
Foskey has got to win a rep one of these days. He took more pass rush snaps (34) than anyone else on the team against Arizona but he only bagged a single quarterback pressure. He never put his hands on the Cardinals quarterback. That's unacceptable for a second-round draft pick in his second season with the team.
Others on notice
Quarterback Derek Carr (44.4) and right guard Cesar Ruiz (41.8) both missed the cutoff for snaps played, while left guard Olisaemeka Udoh (49.8 on 29 snaps) was right on the cusp for our list, having been fouled for holding and a false start. Defensively, rookie linebacker Isaiah Stalbird (43.0) was limited to 17 snaps with an ankle injury, while defensive end Chase Young (38.5) only played 10 snaps. Young created two quarterback pressures but was graded poorly in each phase, which doesn't line up with what we saw on tape.
