Pewaukee's Milan Momcilovic wins Gatorade boys basketball player of the year

Pewaukee senior forward Milan Momcilovic was named the 2022-2023 Gatorade Wisconsin Boys Basketball Player of the Year in a press release Wednesday morning.

Momcilovic is the first boys basketball player from Pewaukee to be recognized with the award, given annually since 1985. The 6-foot-8 senior has averaged 23 points, 9.3 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.2 blocks and one steal per game this season for the Pirates, who will compete for their third-straight WIAA Division 2 state title in Madison beginning on Friday in their semifinal matchup with Nicolet.

He joins other recent honorees from the greater Milwaukee area, including 2021-2022 winner Seth Trimble of Menomonee Falls, 2020-2021 winner Brandin Podziemski of St. John’s Northwestern Academies, 2019-2020 winner Patrick Baldwin of Sussex Hamilton and 2018-2019 winner Jalen Johnson of Nicolet.

What is Gatorade Player of the Year?

The Gatorade Player of the Year program recognizes players across the 50 states and the District of Columbia that sanction high school sports including football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball and boys track and field. A National Player of the Year is also awarded in each sport.

Milan Momcilovic’s impact off the court

The release also recognized Momcilovic for his volunteer work with the Key Club, a student-led organization to promote community service among high school students. He has also been a contributor to the Special Olympics as a fundraiser and by running practices for athletes. In the classroom, Momcilovic has maintained a 3.34 GPA.

What’s next for Milan Momcilovic?

The Iowa State commit is also a finalist for the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association’s Mr. Basketball award, also given to the state’s most outstanding boys basketball player. His Pirates earned the top overall seed in the WIAA Division 2 state tournament, which begins Friday.
