He might not have had the most impressive performance of the night, but New York Mets rookie Pete Alonso is your 2019 Home Run Derby Champion.

That was some good news for the New York Mets, who are 40-50 and mired in one of their Metsiest seasons ever. Predictably, the team is quite thrilled.

So thrilled, in fact, that the team is almost giving away tickets to every one of their 39 remaining home games at Citi Field.

Yup, being excited about Alonso’s win has to be the only reason why the Mets are doing something that should help fill a stadium that has seen large swaths of empty seats as the the team flounders.

Even before winning the Derby, Alonso has been one of the few good reasons to watch the Mets this year. The rookie first-baseman is hitting .280/.372/.634 with 30 home runs and is considered by some to be the frontrunner for NL Rookie of the Year.

And now, he’s blessing Mets fans with $3 tickets to see their favorite team play the Miami Marlins. The Washington Nationals did a similar promotion when Bryce Harper won last year’s Home Run Derby, offering $1 tickets in a flash sale after the now-departed slugger hit many more home runs than the team was probably expecting.

The Mets’ Alonso promotion does come with an important caveat of being restricted to the stadium’s Baseline Box, Excelsior Box, Bud Light Landing, Promenade Reserved, Promenade Outfield. Basically, no seats behind home plate at any level and very few at field level.
