Penny Hardaway tweaks starting lineup for Memphis basketball vs. Charlotte

Penny Hardaway will trot out the fifth different Memphis basketball starting lineup in the last seven games Wednesday against Charlotte at FedExForum.

But it won't be the drastic shakeup some may have anticipated.

The starting five will consist of Jahvon Quinerly, David Jones, Nicholas Jourdain, Nae'Qwan Tomlin and Malcolm Dandridge, Dave Woloshin said on the pregame radio broadcast. Jones has started every game this season. Quinerly has started all but one, while Jourdain has 19 starts, Dandridge has 18 and Tomlin has five.

Jaykwon Walton is the only regular starter out of the starting lineup. He has started 23 games this season, including every one since Dec. 16.

Memphis (18-8, 7-6 AAC) will also be shorthanded against Charlotte (17-8, 11-2). Neither Jayden Hardaway, Jayhlon Young nor Jordan Brown are expected to be available against the 49ers due to various injuries. Young has missed three of the last four games with an ankle injury. He played only one minute of last week's 106-79 loss at SMU.

Jones is also nursing a sore thumb after the game against the Mustangs.

In the aftermath of the blowout at the hands of the Mustangs, Hardaway called some of his players’ effort "embarrassing" and "unacceptable." He declined to name the players he considered to be the ones not competing. But, on the heels of the team’s nosedive over the past few weeks (six losses in its last nine games), Hardaway indicated recently he will only give playing time to “the guys that are bought in.”

Following last week's loss to SMU, Hardaway said he gave more minutes to "players that had a care factor." He referenced true freshman guard Carl Cherenfant and walk-on point guard Joe Cooper (who made his Memphis debut against SMU) as "guys (who) just want to go out there and just work hard. That's the Memphis way."

On Monday, during his weekly radio show, Hardaway doubled down.

"The guys that are going to play now, there has to be a care factor about the city and the school," he said. "There has to be. There has to be going out there on the court and leaving it on the line.”
