Penei Sewell, Marcus Davenport miss Detroit Lions practice

Penei Sewell got up slowly after Dan Skipper blocked safety Kamren Curl into the back of his right leg in the first quarter of Sunday's win over the Los Angeles Rams. Sewell, the Detroit Lions' All-Pro right tackle, stayed in the game and didn't miss a snap.

Sewell was one of two starters to sit out practice Wednesday, along with defensive end Marcus Davenport. Safety Ifeatu Melifonwu (Achilles) also did not practice, while undrafted rookie safety Loren Strickland returned after missing practice last week with a thumb injury.

The Lions (1-0) had their entire starting offensive line on the field Sunday — Sewell, Kevin Zeitler, Frank Ragnow, Graham Glasgow and Taylor Decker — for the first time since early in training camp, when Zeitler suffered a shoulder injury.

Davenport, one of the team's top free agent additions of the offseason, has a long injury history and played just four games last season with the Minnesota Vikings because of ankle surgery.

He had a strong Lions debut with a half-sack and four quarterback hits in 49 defensive snaps, but did not play on the Lions' final defensive series.
