Paul Skenes faces off with Jackson Holliday, hits 100 mph with Pirates in spring training

The No. 1 overall pick of the 2023 MLB Draft, Paul Skenes, is with the Pirates at spring training. And the 2023 College World Series' Most Outstanding Player is already turning heads in Florida.

Skenes, the No. 3 prospect in baseball per MLB Pipeline, faced off against No. 1 when he pitched against Jackson Holliday and the Orioles on Thursday. Skenes hit 100 mph, and elicited a groundout from the highly touted middle infielder.

Skenes, 21, will be 22 in May and is expected to be part of the Pirates' not-too-distant future. He got up to 102 mph in his spring debut and retired the Orioles in order, including Holliday, Adley Rutschman and Heston Kjerstad.

Skenes was level coming into the matchup.

"Really it's learning how to compete against these hitters," Skenes said ahead of his debut Thursday when asked what he had to work on to go pro. "And I've had a couple live sessions. But I haven't gotten to pitch in-game yet. And really just gotta get a feel for what kind of pitches they're gonna swing at. What they're gonna take. And kind of mold my game to that a little bit.

"But in terms of stuff and command and competing, I don't think there's a whole lot it's just kind of learning the game a little bit. Because it is different than college."

Skenes comes with a ready-made fastball-slider one-two punch, which was on full display Thursday. Whether he'll end up going pro will ultimately be on the Pirates. But he certainly looked the part of the No. 1 overall pick against a tough slate of hitters in his debut.

The Pirates, of course, are incentivized to bring Skenes up early. If he comes up to the big leagues early enough, he could make a Rookie of the Year run in the National League. The competition will be steep, particularly with Yoshinobu Yamamoto joining the Dodgers and Noelvi Marte presumably being ready to make the jump for the Reds.

But with prospect promotion incentives rewarding MLB teams for calling players up and those players finding success, LSU fans may see Skenes in Pittsburgh sooner than what would be considered "traditional."
